Rights groups in Kenya have reported that six protesters were found abandoned by the roadside and allege they were beaten and subjected to torture following their arrest during memorial gatherings for protesters killed in 2024. Amnesty International Kenya identified the six individuals as Collins Ochieng, Muteti Mulinge, Michael Ngigi, Elisha Alam, Fredrick Ojiro, and Christine Walubengo, who went missing after being arrested on Thursday.

The arrests occurred as demonstrators marked the second anniversary of a 2024 protest in which 60 people were killed by security forces. Kenyan Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen stated that about 355 people were arrested across the country on that day.

Amnesty Kenya has called for an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, emphasizing that those responsible for alleged torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment must be held accountable.

According to a police watchdog, at least 127 people were killed during protests in Kenya in June-July 2024 and a similar period in 2025, with security forces reportedly using near-total impunity in shooting protesters.
