New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, addressed his administration's progress and political influence in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl. Since taking office in January, Mamdani's administration has delivered free childcare for 2-year-olds for the first time in New York City history and paved 165,000 potholes. He also noted that the city has experienced its lowest recorded crime rate during this period.
Mamdani responded to Republicans labeling him as the "poster child" for the Democratic party with the words, "Let them."
His popularity has extended beyond the city, as three candidates he endorsed won their congressional primaries this year, including two who unseated multi-term Democrats. Mamdani said, "What you're seeing is that New Yorkers experienced this for six months and made the decision that they wanted to see more of it on the national stage as well."
The mayor emphasized that New Yorkers are not the only ones noticing the changes under his leadership.
Jonathan Karl's full interview with Mayor Mamdani will air on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, June 28.
