E. Jean Carroll has asked a federal court to release more than $5 million to her daily after the Supreme Court declined to hear former President Donald Trump's appeal seeking to overturn a jury verdict. The verdict found Trump abused Carroll in the mid-1990s and defamed her.
Carroll's attorneys filed papers in Manhattan federal court accusing Trump of unjustly delaying the release of funds after the high court's unanimous decision. Carroll first publicly accused Trump of assault in 2019, alleging he attacked her in a dressing room at a luxury department store in Midtown Manhattan in the spring of 1996.
Trump denies ever meeting Carroll and maintains that her allegations are fabricated. His legal team argued that the trial was prejudiced, citing the introduction of the "Access Hollywood" tape where Trump made lewd remarks about women.
The Supreme Court's order relates to Carroll's successful 2023 defamation lawsuit against Trump, in which a jury awarded her $5 million. On Tuesday, Carroll's lawyers requested that amount plus nearly $800,000 in interest be released.
In response, Trump posted on Truth Social reiterating his denial of ever meeting Carroll and criticized the case as an attack on the United States and its values, claiming New York State enacted a law to wrongfully target him.
