As Americans enjoy the busy July Fourth weekend, new public health threats have emerged, including flesh-eating bacteria found in coastal waters of New York's Long Island. Researchers discovered the bacteria this spring, prompting local officials in the Hamptons to issue alerts. Meanwhile, eight infections have been reported in Florida this year, and Mississippi health officials have urged residents to take precautions.

According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fact sheet, about 1 in 5 people infected by this bacteria die, sometimes within days of illness onset. Many infected individuals may require intensive care or limb amputation.

Experts link these rising threats to significant cuts in federal health programs. The Department of Agriculture lost 18% of its workforce in the first half of 2025, as reported by the USDA's Office of Inspector General, impacting inspection services crucial for responding to parasites and other microbial dangers.

"It is important to track coastal temperatures, and that will relate to the distributions of Vibrio," said Christopher Gobler, professor at New York's Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. He noted that other data sources are also used by researchers.

Tom Frieden, former CDC director and current president of Resolve to Save Lives, stated, "We are letting down defenses that were necessary to protect against microbial threats. Instead of protecting, we're doing the opposite."

In response, the Department of Health and Human Services emphasized ongoing efforts to implement "the most significant public health reforms in a generation focused on prevention, accountability, scientific transparency, and better health outcomes," according to spokesperson Emily Hilliard.

Additionally, 80% of USAID grants for global malaria programs were targeted for termination, according to the independent research group KFF.

The U.S. government continues to address other health crises, with the State Department affirming aggressive measures to contain the Ebola outbreak at its source to protect Americans and prevent international spread.
