Progressive Manny Rutinel is projected to win the Democratic primary for Colorado's 8th Congressional District (CD-8), a GOP-held seat considered one of the nation's toss-up districts. As of Wednesday morning, Rutinel held nearly 62% of the vote, significantly ahead of his closest competitor, Shannon Bird, who had nearly 35%, and Evan Munsing, who remained on the ballot despite dropping out, with nearly 5%.

CD-8 covers a large section of northern Denver metro and parts of Larimer and Weld Counties, including Greeley. The district has been represented by Democrat Yadira Caraveo from 2022 to 2024. Rutinel aims to become the first two-term congressional representative since the district's formation four years ago.

Rutinel described the race as "one of the most important races in the country." He told CBS Colorado that voters in his district seek leaders willing to "stand up to Donald Trump and fight for working people," pledging to oppose President Trump's policies if elected. He emphasized the need for leaders who understand the struggles and aspirations of working communities.

The outcome in CD-8 is expected to play a significant role in determining control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the upcoming general election.
