EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Kylian Mbappé put France ahead with a brilliant crossover step in the 45th minute and added a second-half goal to break a World Cup knockout round scoring record. France defeated Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32, advancing to face Paraguay in the round of 16.

Bradley Barcola scored France’s second goal in the 53rd minute, while Mbappé capped the scoring in the 74th minute, marking his third two-goal game in four matches. His six goals in this tournament tie him with Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the lead and bring his World Cup career total to 18, just one shy of Messi’s record.

Mbappé emphasized the team effort, saying through a translator, “I’m very aware of who I am, how I play, what I shall do, but it’s not just about me. The entire team is aware of what should be done.”

France coach Didier Deschamps, who missed the final group game to attend his mother’s funeral, was celebrated by Mbappé and the entire team after the first goal, a gesture that spoke volumes about the squad’s unity.

France, the runner-up four years ago and a tournament favorite, has outscored opponents 13-2 so far, with Michael Olise assisting on five goals. Sweden captain Victor Lindelöf acknowledged France’s skill, stating through a translator, “They are skilled at knowing when to change the pace and increase it, when to possess the ball, went to fall back.”

Despite the team’s star-studded lineup, it is their unity and selflessness that are seen as their greatest assets moving forward. Mbappé reflected on his growth, saying, “I'm not saying that the other World Cups I did not enjoy, but I was younger. I was focused then in delivering the best performances. And today I believe I can do both: delivering great performances and obviously enjoying [it].”

France’s next challenge will be against Paraguay, who surprised many by upsetting Germany in the round of 32.
