Mexico's national football team ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory with a 2-0 win over Ecuador at a packed Azteca Stadium. Following the match, fans flooded plazas and neighborhoods across Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and smaller towns, waving flags, setting off fireworks, and singing late into the night.
In Mexico City's historic Zocalo, thousands dressed in green jerseys and draped in tricolor flags chanted the rallying cry “Y si si?” (“What if?”) amid car horns and drumbeats. Mariachi bands played classics like “El Rey” while families and friends hugged, danced, and climbed lampposts and monuments to celebrate the long-awaited victory.
Similar scenes were reported outside bars, fan zones, and community screens nationwide. Older supporters reminisced about memories from 1986, while younger fans said they were witnessing history for the first time. With Mexico now advancing to the last 16, many supporters believe the celebrations are just beginning and are hopeful for a deeper run on home soil.
