The administration of United States President Donald Trump has renewed its denunciation of the International Criminal Court (ICC), asserting that any attempt by the court to exercise jurisdiction over US citizens would be a "direct affront" to American sovereignty.
In a letter dated June 29 and released publicly on July 2, Todd Blanche, the acting US attorney general, described the ICC as having acted in an "increasingly lawless and illegitimate manner." The letter was addressed to ICC president Tomoko Akane but did not introduce new policy changes.
This statement follows a lawsuit filed by three ICC judges in a Manhattan federal court challenging sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. The legal action underscores escalating tensions between the US and the ICC.
The ICC had previously issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes during Israel's conflict in Gaza. The US has consistently opposed ICC investigations involving its allies and citizens.
Additionally, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has indicated he might use local law enforcement to arrest Netanyahu if he visits the city, reflecting the broader international controversy surrounding the ICC's actions.
