President Donald Trump has vowed to deliver a lengthy speech on the National Mall this July 4th, the United States’ 250th birthday, even as weather forecasts predict temperatures reaching 107 degrees.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, Trump said, “By the way, on July 4th, it’s going to be approximately 107 degrees out, and I’m going to go, and I’m going to make a really long speech just to show that I can do anything.”
The "Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks" event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on the National Mall, with Trump set to speak at 9:45 p.m. Freedom 250, the Trump administration’s organization managing the Great American State Fair along the National Mall, is also organizing the event.
Trump previously described the event as “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all,” promising “incredible Flyovers and Airshows featuring our Top Military Pilots and Equipment.” He also announced plans to conclude the program with what he called the "LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY" in the nation’s capital.
According to Freedom 250’s website, the fireworks show is slated to begin at 10:30 p.m., though Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser stated the show will start at 11 p.m.
The National Weather Service (NWS) confirms the forecasted high of 107 degrees for Washington, D.C., a temperature that would surpass the city’s previous Fourth of July record of 100 degrees set in 1919.
