Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged fans to avoid heavy drinking and crowded areas during upcoming World Cup celebrations, following the deaths of at least four people in Mexico City after the national team's last victory.

The fatalities occurred near the central Paseo de la Reforma, where approximately one million people had gathered to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador in the previous round. Authorities reported that three victims—a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48—died of suffocation after being crushed in the crowd.

Speaking at her regular morning press conference on July 3, Sheinbaum emphasized the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption during such events. "We must avoid alcohol abuse, because whenever there is excessive drinking at these kinds of celebrations, problems can arise, including more violence linked to alcohol," she said.

Sheinbaum also called on supporters to share responsibility with authorities in ensuring that celebrations remain safe, especially as the national team prepares to face England in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday.
