FIFA has suspended the one-match red card ban on United States striker Folarin Balogun, enabling him to participate in the upcoming World Cup last 16 match against Belgium. Balogun had received a red card for stepping awkwardly on the right ankle of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemović during the Round of 32 match, which the USA won 2-0.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced that the implementation of Balogun's suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Balogun commits a similar infringement during this period, the suspension will be enforced along with any additional sanctions.

US President Donald Trump intervened by calling FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s suspension. Trump expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed astonishment at the decision and stated it is investigating all potential options to challenge the ruling. Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia mocked FIFA’s action, comparing the timing of the decision to April Fools' Day and criticizing the federation for not defending the national team.

US Soccer welcomed the decision, confirming Balogun’s eligibility to compete. Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament, had previously said a yellow card would have been a fairer punishment.
