Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach has publicly backed coach Tony Popovic's decision to substitute him for Mat Ryan during the penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the World Cup round-of-32 match held in Arlington, Texas.

With the score tied 1-1 at the end of extra time, Popovic brought on veteran goalkeeper Mat Ryan for the shootout. However, Ryan was unable to prevent Egypt from winning 4-2 on penalties. The late switch drew condemnation from fans and football pundits, but Beach stated he had not discussed the decision with Popovic and respects the coach's call.

"There was no need for a chat in regards to any of that," Beach told reporters upon returning to Melbourne from the United States. "He's the coach, he makes the call, and as players we respect him and respect his decisions."

Beach had performed strongly during the tournament, making a crucial reflex save in second-half stoppage time and keeping clean sheets against Turkey and Paraguay to help Australia reach the knockout phase. In recognition of his efforts, Melbourne's local council temporarily renamed St Kilda Beach to "Patrick Beach" for the duration of the World Cup.

Reflecting on his World Cup experience, the Melbourne City goalkeeper said, "Playing at a World Cup on a big held like that in front of millions of fans around the world, it’s always a step up, but I’m very happy and proud of how I performed."

Looking ahead, Beach expressed optimism about the upcoming Asian Cup, stating, "We’ll try to do something special there."
