A 2-year-old girl died after being left in a hot minivan in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on July 5, 2026, police said. Officers found the child around 1:35 p.m. Sunday when they responded to a home about 20 miles north of Miami.
The heat index in Hallandale Beach that day reached 101 degrees, intensifying the danger posed by the hot vehicle. The toddler was taken to a hospital but was later declared dead, authorities confirmed.
The Hallandale Beach Police Department described the incident as "a heartbreaking loss," extending their condolences to the child's family and all affected by the tragedy. They also reminded parents, guardians, and caregivers to always check the back seat before locking their vehicles and walking away.
Police stated that prosecutors are currently reviewing the case and that "no charging decision has been made at this time."
According to KidsAndCars.org, at least 37 children died in hot cars across the United States last year.
