Tyrin Johnson, 20, was fatally shot by Tennessee National Guard troops at approximately 4 a.m. CDT on Sunday in Memphis, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident occurred during a pursuit by Memphis police officers after Johnson fired shots in the area while carrying a handgun.
The National Guard soldiers, assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force, were nearby and joined the pursuit. The situation escalated, leading to two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, resulting in his death. The state National Guard, which has over 10,700 soldiers, is assisting the Memphis Police Department by providing “additional eyes and ears” as part of the mission.
Johnson’s grandfather, Evaniel Johnson, told The Associated Press that his grandson carried a gun for protection following a recent assault in Nashville. He described Tyrin as someone who was simply trying to enjoy the Fourth of July and had plans for a future involving buying homes and caring for his child.
Evaniel Johnson is demanding the release of video footage from the incident, stating, “Show me the video. Please show me that — and then I’m OK. Until you show me that, I’m gonna fight and advocate for my grandson until there’s no breath in me.”
The TBI is conducting an investigation and will share its findings with Steven Mulroy, the Democratic district attorney of Shelby County, Tennessee, which includes Memphis. Mulroy will determine whether any further action is warranted.
