FIFA has suspended the match ban for United States striker Folarin Balogun following a red card he received during the US match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, drawing criticism from former players, officials, and commentators.
The red card was issued after Balogun stepped awkwardly on Tarik Muharemović's ankle in a challenge. Referee Raphael Claus initially did not discipline Balogun but later gave the red card after reviewing the incident on Video Assisted Referee (VAR) monitors.
FIFA stated, "In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year." The statement added that if Balogun commits a similar infringement during this probation, the suspension will be enforced alongside any additional sanctions.
Commentator Beau Dure, writing for The Guardian, described the contact as accidental. Tarik Muharemović accepted the decision and emphasized maintaining composure, saying, "I never want to react out of anger and out of emotion."
The incident has also drawn attention beyond the pitch. Former US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, expressing that the red card call seemed unfair, though he admitted unfamiliarity with the red card rules.
The controversy highlights ongoing discussions about FIFA's disciplinary integrity and the use of VAR in high-stakes matches.
