French football star Kylian Mbappe has publicly condemned racist remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after Paraguay's 0-1 loss to France in the FIFA World Cup round of 16. Amarilla, a member of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, criticized Mbappe following his winning penalty that secured France's victory.

Mbappe's response highlighted the broader issue of racism faced by footballers of African descent on and off the pitch. The incident adds to a series of racist abuses in football, including a 2014 incident where Afro-Brazilian defender Dani Alves was targeted with a banana thrown by a fan during a La Liga match in Spain.

More recently, in February 2026, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni was reported to have directed a racial slur mid-game, causing a 10-minute halt during a high-profile Champions League match. Additionally, England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho, all of Caribbean or African descent, faced intense online racist abuse after missing penalty kicks in the UEFA Euro 2020 final against Italy.

These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in combating racism in football globally.
