South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has set a new global aviation record by reaching 1 billion cumulative passengers in the shortest time among major hub airports, according to the airport operator.

The Incheon International Airport Corp (IIAC) reported that the airport crossed the 1 billion passenger milestone 25 years and three months after opening in March 2001. This pace surpasses other historic global hubs, including Germany’s Munich Airport, which took 33 years and 10 months, and Singapore’s Changi Airport, which reached the mark in 35 years and five months.

Japan’s Narita International Airport achieved the milestone in 39 years and two months, while Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates required 58 years and two months.

To put the figure in perspective, 1 billion passengers equates to an average of 108,000 travelers daily since the airport’s launch—approximately 4,513 passengers per hour or 75 passengers every minute. This volume corresponds to one out of every eight people on Earth having used the airport or every South Korean passing through it roughly 19 times.

The IIAC commemorated the milestone with an official ceremony at Terminal 2, attended by acting President Kim Bum-ho and senior executives from Korean Air.
