The United States military announced it has launched airstrikes against several locations in southern Iran, including the southern port city of Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Bandar Abbas. The strikes began on Tuesday and were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
Iranian media reported multiple explosions in these strategic areas. State TV cited by Al Jazeera's correspondent Tohid Asadi noted six explosions on Qeshm Island, the largest island near the Strait of Hormuz, and at least seven explosions near Sirik Port, both critical points for Iran's control over the strait.
In a related development, the US Treasury Department revoked the temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil less than 20 days after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed. Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi condemned the US actions, stating on social media that revoking the waiver and conducting military operations constitute serious violations of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
These events come a day after attacks on Qatari and Saudi tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting escalating tensions in the region.
