The United States launched fresh military strikes against Iran and revoked a temporary licence allowing Iranian oil sales on July 7, 2026, following attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation threatens to undermine a fragile ceasefire established the previous month.

US Central Command announced that American forces had begun operations against Iran in retaliation for the attacks on commercial shipping transiting one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. In a statement, Central Command said, “US Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping.”

Iranian media reported explosions near the port area of Sirik on Iran’s southern coast, indicating the locations affected by the US strikes.

The military response came shortly after Washington moved to restore sanctions on Iranian oil by revoking a temporary waiver granted under an interim agreement following the end of hostilities last month.

This development marks a significant escalation in US-Iran tensions and impacts the security of the Hormuz Strait, a critical global shipping route.
