Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga, who plays for Zimbabwe's national team and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, survived a gun attack in Johannesburg on Sunday. The 31-year-old was driving through the inner city suburb of Hillbrow with his younger brother when an unknown gunman opened fire on their car, reportedly mistaking Lunga for an undercover police officer.
Lunga escaped unharmed. South African police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed they are investigating the incident as a case of attempted murder, but no arrests have been made so far.
Lunga has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe and was part of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021, he has contributed to four domestic league titles and the club's second African Champions League victory in May.
Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Zimbabwe's national team, known as the Warriors, have officially commented on the shooting. However, the Warriors posted a picture of Lunga in a prayer position with the caption "In God we trust" alongside his name.
Crime remains a significant issue in South Africa, which has one of the highest murder rates globally.
