A São Paulo criminal court sentenced Audato and Ieda Denardi to 50 days in prison for "intellectual neglect" after they homeschooled their two daughters, aged 15 and 11, without using a state-approved curriculum. The court ruled that the Denardis failed to include programs on "gender and sex education" and "tolerance and diversity" in their daughters' education, according to Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International.

The court also determined that the parents did not properly integrate their children into Brazilian culture, citing the girls' preference for religious and classical music over popular genres such as trap or "sertanejo" (folk) music.

The Denardis began homeschooling their daughters in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic after concluding that their schools were not providing a proper education. They officially withdrew their children in 2022, after which state officials conducted home visits and pressured them to re-enroll the girls.

Defense attorney Isabel Monteiro claimed the judge made an "ideological decision to convict them," largely based on the older daughter's preference for sacred music rather than mainstream music with explicit lyrics. Monteiro also stated that the Denardis submitted over 3,000 pages of evidence demonstrating they had not intellectually abandoned their children.

The sentence was handed down by a lower court in April.
