Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which includes a full trade kicker and a player option for the 2030-31 season. The 29-year-old signed the extension on the first day he was eligible this summer, foregoing the chance to wait another year for a potential five-year, $353 million deal.

Mitchell has been a consistent All-Star for seven straight seasons, including three with the Utah Jazz before being traded to Cleveland in the 2022 offseason. Over four seasons with the Cavaliers, he has averaged 26.7 points per game, including 27.9 points in the most recent season, and has earned All-NBA honors three times.

The extension solidifies Cleveland's commitment to building their team around Mitchell. He expressed having "unfinished business" following the Cavaliers' sweep by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Mitchell was entering the 2026-27 season on the last guaranteed year of his previous contract before a 2027 player option would have taken effect.

This contract move has also fueled speculation about a possible LeBron James return to Cleveland. James, currently with the Los Angeles Lakers, has been a central figure in rumors about reuniting with the Cavaliers.
