A federal judge in New York has ordered former President Donald Trump to pay E. Jean Carroll $5 million in damages plus nearly $800,000 in interest. This follows a 2023 jury verdict that held Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the mid-1990s in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman and defaming her in 2022 when he denied her claim.
The order came while Trump was attending the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, where he met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Three years prior, Trump had deposited $5.55 million into the federal government’s Court Registry Investment System, effectively holding the funds in escrow during the appeals process.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Trump's appeal of the case. After this decision, Carroll's attorneys requested a federal judge to order Trump to pay the judgment, noting that Trump's lawyers indicated he might seek Supreme Court reconsideration.
Judge Lewis Kaplan stated, "[A]fter four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end." Under the court's stipulation, Carroll is now entitled to receive the payment.
Trump’s attorneys filed a notice indicating they would appeal the payment order. In a social media post following the Supreme Court's rejection of his appeal, Trump vowed to "continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength."
Separately, a related case determined Trump owes Carroll an additional $83 million in damages, which remains under appeal.
