South Korea is pursuing an "unprecedented" initiative to establish a new semiconductor production hub in the country's southwest, involving major players Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The plan seeks to leverage the ongoing AI-driven surge in chip demand amid a persistent supply crunch.

However, industry observers are raising questions about how this ambitious project will align with the inherently cyclical nature of the memory chip market. Despite the current AI-fueled demand, memory markets have historically experienced fluctuations that could affect the hub's long-term viability.

The new hub complements existing facilities such as Samsung's chip production plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, highlighting the country's strategic focus on strengthening its semiconductor industry.
