As Americans continue to face persistent inflation, President Donald Trump sought to highlight positive economic news by claiming credit for a national grocery chain’s sale on barbecue essentials ahead of the July 4 holiday.
Walmart and Sam's Club announced on Monday that they were offering thousands of lower prices this summer to help customers save on popular seasonal items such as ground beef, soda, potato chips, and corn on the cob. The retailers described the savings as designed to help customers enjoy backyard barbecues, family vacations, pool days, and neighborhood gatherings while spending less on products they need and love.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Great news! I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration's request to celebrate our great Country's 250th birthday."
However, last April, Trump imposed tariffs on nearly every other country, a move that Walmart and other retailers warned could force them to raise prices. Trump has previously criticized Walmart for blaming tariffs for price increases, stating that "Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, 'EAT THE TARIFFS,' and not charge valued customers ANYTHING."
Additionally, Patrick Thomas and Sarah Nassauer of The Wall Street Journal reported that ahead of the July 4 holiday, the Department of Agriculture reached out to multiple national grocers to inquire about beef prices.
This is not the first time Trump has taken credit for Walmart’s pricing decisions; last year, he claimed responsibility for Walmart’s Thanksgiving meal basket being 25 percent less expensive than the previous year, though that basket also contained fewer and less expensive items.
