President Trump announced plans to hold a press conference on Wednesday, the final day of the NATO summit in Ankara, following recent U.S. military strikes on Iran. These strikes were in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, an action NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described as "absolutely necessary." Rutte stated, "It was a very strong response, and I'm with you on this."
During the summit, Trump emphasized the need for NATO members to increase their defense spending to 5% of their annual GDP, expressing frustration with some allies he believes are not contributing adequately.
Trump also highlighted the strategic relationship between the United States and Turkey, calling Turkey "more helpful to the United States than many other more traditional countries." He announced plans to ease sanctions on Turkey and is considering allowing the country to reenter the F-35 fighter jet program. Praising Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump said, "I have no concerns at all about anything," and described Turkey as a "much better country, much more powerful country" under Erdoğan's leadership.
Tensions with Iran remain high, with the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding in jeopardy after Iran's tanker attacks and the U.S. revoking a general license for Iran to sell oil. Trump hinted at forthcoming developments, stating, "But I think there's going to be ... something's going to come out."
The NATO summit is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday in Ankara, with Trump’s press conference expected to address these critical issues.
