Chez Xue, a Chinese restaurant in Northern California, has introduced a policy fining parents for damages caused by their disruptive children. Owner You You Xue told The Post that after repeated incidents of children damaging property and disturbing other diners, he began adding damage charges to some customers' bills.
Xue explained, "My staff, my servers were being forced to parent children on behalf of other parents. That’s not their job." He added, "Parenting has become so relaxed, and I know if I acted some ways these children are acting, I would have gotten my a-- beat."
The charges cover specific incidents, such as a child playing on booth seats who bumped a teacup to the ground, resulting in a $5.47 damage fee to the parent. Xue clarified that parents are not charged for accidents but emphasized the policy was necessary due to a decline in parenting standards and children's behavior.
He stated, "We don’t blame the kids — I’m very proud of the fact that this is an unpretentious restaurant where people can come with their whole families. It’s to remind this very small group of parents who are not doing their jobs: please do your job so we can do ours."
Guests who do not respect the policy may be asked to leave, and parents will be held financially liable for all damage caused by their children to restaurant property.
