England defender Jarell Quansah has been suspended for two matches after receiving a red card in the World Cup last-16 match against Mexico. The red card was issued following a video review that determined Quansah made a sliding studs-up tackle during the game.
The two-match ban, confirmed on Thursday, means Quansah will miss England’s quarterfinal against Norway on Saturday in Miami, as well as a potential semifinal if England advance further. The defender would only be eligible for selection again if England reach the World Cup final.
This suspension presents a challenge for England manager Thomas Tuchel, who is already facing defensive difficulties compounded by injuries. England midfielder Jordan Henderson recently underwent surgery on his left wrist after an injury sustained during celebrations following the win over Mexico.
In the round-of-16 match at Mexico’s Estadio Azteca, England secured a 3-2 victory despite being reduced to 10 men, with goals from Jude Bellingham and two penalties by Harry Kane.
Additionally, a day earlier, France coach Didier Deschamps revealed that FIFA had rejected an appeal against a yellow card shown to Michael Olise in France’s last-16 win over Paraguay.
