Washington — Graham Platner suspended his Senate campaign this week after a woman accused him of sexual assault. Platner has denied the allegations. This development has triggered a swift response among Maine Democrats as they seek a replacement nominee to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
The Maine Democratic Party announced it will hold a nominating convention to select a new Senate nominee. The party has until July 27 at 5 p.m. to finalize the replacement after Platner officially files paperwork to withdraw.
Several Democrats have expressed interest in the nomination. Nirav Shah, former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and recent runner-up in Maine's Democratic gubernatorial primary, announced his intent to seek the Senate nomination. Another potential candidate, Bellows, who raised just under $1.8 million during her gubernatorial campaign, stated on social media that she has taken on "tough fights for working people" and is continuing her efforts.
Some prominent figures, including Rep. Jared Golden and actor Patrick Dempsey, have declined interest in the Senate race.
The allegations against Platner have been described as "horrifying and completely disqualifying." A Democratic figure commented that while Platner "ignited a powerful movement to challenge the status quo," the seriousness of the allegations necessitates his stepping down. Advocates have emphasized that there is "no place in our politics for sexual violence."
The party's nominating convention details are forthcoming as the race to replace Platner intensifies.
