Representatives from 12 countries participated in a virtual diplomatic field visit on July 9, 2026, to a displacement site in the Gaza Strip, hearing directly from residents about their urgent humanitarian needs, the United Nations reported.

The online visit to the Al Mawasi site in Khan Younis was led by Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), and his deputy, Suzanna Tkalec. Due to restricted access since October 2023, diplomatic missions, like journalists, have faced difficulties entering Gaza, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric explained during a briefing in New York.

Through videolink, diplomats observed living conditions and relief efforts, including a water distribution point where community members, including children, collected water delivered by truck via a local partner project funded by the UN’s OPT Humanitarian Fund. Displaced individuals conveyed their need for sustainable water services, especially during hot summer days, and cash-for-work opportunities to support their families.

Alakbarov expressed gratitude for the diplomats' financial support but emphasized the necessity for increased funding and political measures to overcome ongoing obstacles and expand relief operations.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) continues its support across Gaza, recently screening nearly 5,000 children aged six to 59 months at health centers and medical points, identifying 203 cases of malnutrition.

Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) is providing specialized bottles to 45 infants born with cleft lip or cleft palate in Gaza, conditions that hinder normal breastfeeding.
