FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — France secured a 2-0 victory over Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals on July 9, 2026. Kylian Mbappé contributed a goal and an assist despite missing a first-half penalty kick. His goal in the 60th minute marked his 20th World Cup goal in his 20th match, placing him just behind Argentina's Lionel Messi.
Ousmane Dembélé also scored for France. Mbappé was substituted in the 77th minute after being taken down and was seen with an ice pack on his right ankle but celebrated with teammates after the match.
Morocco's best chance came just before halftime when Achraf Hakimi's free kick narrowly missed the goal. Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi commented, "We wanted to go on. When we had ball possession, our transitions were not great and we had to run a little more."
France will face either Spain or Belgium in the semifinals scheduled for Tuesday in Dallas. This marks a repeat of the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where France also defeated Morocco 2-0 in the semifinals, with Morocco becoming the first African team to reach that stage.
