US President Donald Trump announced on July 10, 2026, that he will not sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill, which he described as “a big yawn.” Despite his refusal, the bill can become law without his signature after 10 days from its presentation to him.

Trump stated in a social media post that he is withholding his signature “in PROTEST over the fact that the United States Senate is not capable of passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.” The Save America Act is an election reform bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and create a national voter database using state records.

Earlier, Trump abruptly canceled a June 24 signing ceremony for the housing bill to pressure Republicans into passing the Save America Act. The bipartisan housing bill, a rare agreement in a deeply divided Congress, includes provisions to waive or expedite environmental reviews for home construction projects and caps the number of single-family homes that large Wall Street investors can own.

If Trump chooses to veto the housing bill, Congress would need to attempt to override the veto for it to become law.
