Iran's Mojtaba Khamenei has declared that vengeance is "inevitable" following the death and burial of his father, Ali Khamenei, amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States. Ali Khamenei was buried in his home city of Mashhad on Friday after nearly a week of funeral ceremonies.

The threats of revenge come after an exchange of strikes earlier this week between the US and Iran, triggered by attacks on three commercial tankers, which Iran is purported to have carried out. These exchanges have heightened tensions, leading US President Trump to declare the ceasefire over, although he stated that talks aimed at ending the war would continue.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since before the war and is rumored to have been disfigured in the strike that killed his father, said, "We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraced killers."

He added, "Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out. The matter depends neither on my personal existence nor on that of other officials. Those responsible will take the wish for a peaceful death in their beds to their graves."

The funeral also saw open calls for Trump's assassination.
