Crews began draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Friday, July 11, 2026, to conduct repairs and clean up debris left after the nation's 250th anniversary celebration and July Fourth fireworks. The Trump administration attributed the damage to vandalism.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, overseeing the National Park Service (NPS), told conservative podcaster Katie Miller that the latest round of work had been planned and included removing fireworks debris from the National Mall. "Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff," Burgum said.

Investigators reported that caulk had been spread over foam sealant that was cut with a "sharp knife or razor," the newly applied surface coating was damaged, and about 70 fence post caps were thrown into the pool. Court records show that at least three individuals have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing pieces of the Reflecting Pool's coating.

One individual denied causing damage, stating he stopped during a bike ride and touched a loose piece of peeling blue coating "to satisfy my curiosity as a citizen."

The initial restoration project was completed last month, but problems emerged soon after, prompting this additional maintenance effort. President Donald Trump has been involved in highlighting the issue, holding a photo of the Reflecting Pool during a healthcare event in April 2026.
