Andy Serkis, known for iconic roles such as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes series, has expanded his creative work behind the camera by directing an animated adaptation of George Orwell's classic novel Animal Farm. The film was released in theaters on May 1, 2026.

In a conversation with Reason's Nick Gillespie later that month, Serkis discussed the film, its exploration of authoritarianism, and the common threads in the characters he has portrayed. He recalled first reading Animal Farm at about 10 or 11 years old, noting that while the story initially seemed innocent, he sensed deeper themes beneath the surface.

Serkis emphasized that the film critiques the structures of control and authoritarianism worldwide, including issues such as misinformation and the misuse of power, which remain relevant today. Reflecting on Orwell's original work written 80 years ago during a rise in authoritarian regimes, Serkis highlighted the enduring nature of these themes.

He also spoke about the challenges of acting, explaining that to portray a character convincingly, one must understand and believe in that character's perspective, even if it represents a flawed or authoritarian worldview.
