Senegal has dismissed football coach Pape Thiaw on Saturday, July 12, 2026, following the national team's elimination at the round of 32 stage of the FIFA World Cup. The decision was attributed to the team's underwhelming results during the tournament.

Senegal entered the World Cup with high expectations after winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January by defeating Morocco. However, the team lost its opening two group matches against France and Norway. In the knockout round against Belgium, Senegal squandered a 2-0 lead with five minutes remaining and ultimately lost 3-2 in extra time.

Thiaw, 45, was also facing a five-match ban starting in September during the 2027 Cup of Nations qualifiers due to leading a player walk-off in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco in the 2025 final held in Rabat.

According to French daily L’Equipe, Patrick Vieira, a French World Cup winner born in Dakar, is among the favorites to take over as Senegal's new head coach.
