Switzerland was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals following a 3-1 extra-time defeat to Argentina in Kansas City on Sunday, July 12th, 2026. The match was marked by a contentious VAR decision that saw Swiss forward Breel Embolo receive a second yellow card for simulation in the 72nd minute.
The incident occurred shortly after Dan Ndoye had equalized following an early goal by Argentina's Alexis Mac Allister, with Switzerland appearing to be the stronger side at that point. Portuguese referee João Pinheiro initially booked Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes before a lengthy VAR review determined Embolo had not been fouled.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin strongly criticized the decision, describing the rule behind Embolo's sending off as "unacceptable" and stating, "There was definitely no reason to award a yellow card." He further commented, "It was a harmless situation. He should have let play continue," and added, "It's a rule that has nothing to do with football."
Embolo was visibly upset, collapsing in tears and being consoled by teammates before leaving the pitch. Switzerland managed to hold Argentina until the 112th minute, when Julián Alvarez scored a long-range goal, followed by Lautaro Martínez's third goal nine minutes later.
Yakin expressed his disappointment over the elimination, saying, "It's very painful that we were eliminated that way. I don't think we deserve that today, and in my opinion, my boys are the real heroes."
