Longtime United States Senator Lindsey Graham, a 71-year-old Republican and close ally of President Donald Trump, has died, potentially altering the political landscape ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled later this year. Graham was known for his support of Trump’s domestic and international policies, including the US-Israel stance on Iran.

According to US media reports, emergency services were called to Graham’s residence on Saturday evening shortly after he returned from a business trip to Kyiv, Ukraine. His office initially stated he died of a “sudden and brief” illness.

Graham’s death has reduced the Republican Party’s majority in the 100-member Senate to 51 seats. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said a fall had led to his hospitalization and that he would not return to the Senate “quite yet.”

Reactions to Graham’s death have been mixed. Iranian state television announced his passing in hostile terms, with an anchor stating, “I congratulate the great nation of Iran on Lindsey Graham, the warmongering and anti-Iranian US senator, having gone to hell.”

Conversely, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal commented on social media platform X that although he often disagreed with Graham, “he listened to me & others who might have opposing views & sought to bridge our differences.”

Graham’s death raises questions about the future of Trump’s agenda and the balance of power in the US Congress as the nation approaches critical elections.
