Nearly a month after his hospitalization, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has disclosed the reasons behind his absence from the Senate. In a detailed statement released on Sunday evening, July 12, 2026, McConnell attributed a fall he suffered last month to complications from his childhood battle with polio. The fall left him briefly unconscious and led to a mild case of pneumonia during his recovery.

McConnell assured Kentuckians that his doctors confirmed he did not break any bones or suffer a concussion. He also ruled out other serious conditions such as heart attack, stroke, tumors, and hemorrhages. Despite these reassurances, the senator stated that on his doctors' advice, he will not return to the Senate floor to vote yet as he continues physical therapy at a rehabilitation center.

"As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet," McConnell said. He added, "But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you."

McConnell’s doctor confirmed that the senator was admitted to the hospital four weeks ago after falling at home and sustaining minor injuries. The situation drew additional attention due to the timing of McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao’s, trip to China shortly after his hospitalization.
