Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has broken his silence nearly a month after being hospitalized, revealing the cause of his absence from the Senate. In a detailed statement released on Sunday evening, July 12th, 2026, McConnell attributed a fall he suffered last month to complications from his childhood battle with polio. The fall left him briefly unconscious and led to a mild case of pneumonia during his recovery.

McConnell assured Kentuckians that his doctors confirmed he did not break any bones or suffer a concussion. He also stated, "I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages."

Despite these reassurances, McConnell said he will not return to the Senate floor to vote yet as he continues physical therapy at a rehabilitation center. "As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet," he said. However, he emphasized that he is not stepping away from Senate business during his recovery.

McConnell’s doctor confirmed that the senator was admitted to the hospital four weeks ago after sustaining minor injuries from the fall at home.
