Nearly a month after his hospitalization, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has disclosed the cause of his absence from the Senate. In a detailed statement released on Sunday evening, July 12th, 2026, McConnell explained that a fall at home, related to complications from his childhood bout with polio, led to his hospitalization.

McConnell said he was "briefly unconscious" following the fall and subsequently developed a mild case of pneumonia during his recovery. He emphasized that doctors confirmed he did not suffer any broken bones or concussion. Additionally, medical evaluations ruled out heart attack, stroke, tumors, and hemorrhages.

Despite his ongoing recovery and physical therapy at a rehabilitation center, McConnell stated, "And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet." He reassured constituents that he remains engaged with Senate business during this period.

McConnell’s doctor noted that the senator was admitted to the hospital four weeks prior after sustaining minor injuries from the fall. The situation drew additional attention due to McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveling to China shortly after his hospitalization.
