FCC Approves Startup’s Space Mirror Satellite to Illuminate Dark Areas on Earth

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a request from Reflect Orbital, a startup based in Hawthorne, California, to build and launch a mirror satellite aimed at reflecting sunlight toward the dark parts of Earth. The FCC granted this approval on July 9, 2026.

Reflect Orbital plans to launch an experimental satellite named Eärendil-1, which will operate in low Earth orbit. The satellite's purpose is to enhance illumination in areas of the planet experiencing darkness by reflecting sunlight.

This approval marks a significant step for innovative space-based solutions targeting Earth's lighting and energy challenges.
