Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent Indian activist, has been on a hunger strike in central New Delhi since June 28, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following exam paper leaks that affected millions of students in May 2026. Wangchuk's fast is in solidarity with the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is staging a sit-in protest at the Jantar Mantar observatory near the Indian parliament.

As of Tuesday, Wangchuk has lost approximately 8.5 kilograms (19 pounds), and his health is reported to be deteriorating, according to a picture posted on X by the CJP showing him surrounded by medics. Opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, have urged Wangchuk to end his hunger strike. Yadav posted on X that Wangchuk's life is "invaluable to the entire world because it embodies a commitment to humanity and the environment that is as profound as his commitment to democracy."

The protest represents a rare act of defiance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12-year rule, highlighting growing public frustration over the education ministry's handling of the exam paper leaks.
