The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has established its first clinical trial centre outside Hong Kong, located at the Nansha branch of Guangzhou First People’s Hospital. This Greater Bay Area Clinical Trial Centre was officially launched on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, following a collaboration agreement signed by representatives from CUHK, Nansha District authorities, and the hospital.

The centre is designed to enhance clinical research capabilities and healthcare quality across the Greater Bay Area. It aims to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative pharmaceuticals and medical technologies to benefit patients in the region. Initial studies at the facility will focus on artificial intelligence-powered scoliosis screening and stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis.

At the inauguration ceremony in Nansha, CUHK pro-vice-chancellor Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung stated, “Through the efforts of all three parties, the centre will be an important platform to advance regional clinical research innovation.” He added that the centre will conduct research in compliance with national regulations and international standards, promote multicentre and cross-regional collaboration, and serve as a platform for talent development and academic exchange.

This initiative reflects a strategic partnership to develop the Greater Bay Area into an international hub for medical innovation.
