Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy questioned on Wednesday, July 15th, why people who fled countries he described as "disasters" are promoting socialism in the United States. Speaking on "The Adam Carolla Show," Portnoy discussed the recent victories of Democratic socialists in New York.

"How we’ve gotten to socialism is somehow seen as this thing that’s going to fix the United States," Portnoy said. He added, "The people are saying it has all migrated from countries that are disasters to come to the United States to get away from their country to come fix the United States, the country that everyone wants to migrate to. It’s a very confusing time."

Portnoy made these remarks after being asked whether he would consider running for mayor of New York. He cited Zohran Mamdani and other candidates backed by the mayor in recent Democratic congressional primaries as reasons for considering a run. During a June 29th appearance at New York’s 92NY promoting his book "Cancel Me If You Can," Portnoy left open the possibility of challenging Mamdani, telling Fox News Digital that "somebody’s got to take that guy and beat him." He argued that Mamdani’s political rise threatened the entrepreneurial values behind the American Dream.

Portnoy also expressed concern about political developments in New York and nationwide, noting, "The voter turnout in the New York primaries was minuscule and they’re organized and they’re stirring up their base."
