Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare announced on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, that his office is conducting an independent and transparent investigation into the fatal shooting of Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on July 7 in Houston, Texas. Teare stated his office is "more than prepared" to prosecute federal immigration agents if criminal wrongdoing is found, emphasizing that "You can't come into our community, take someone's life, and then hide behind a badge."

The Department of Homeland Security claimed Salgado Araujo weaponized his van during a traffic stop, prompting the ICE agent to shoot him. The department also noted that the ICE agents were initially searching for a different individual. Less than a week after this incident, another ICE officer fatally shot a driver in Maine.

Meanwhile, Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, an immigration lawyer representing two of the three passengers in the van during the shooting, has come under scrutiny. Documents obtained by Fox News reveal that Balderas-Ibarra faces felony assault family violence charges related to impeding breathing from a 2024 incident and is currently out on a $20,000 bond. At a press conference, Balderas-Ibarra accused ICE agents of lying about the shooting and racial profiling, stating his clients "will forever be physically and emotionally scarred by this killing," and that "None of these families will ever be whole again."

Balderas-Ibarra also contested ICE's account, saying the agency's versions "have varied" and that his clients’ versions of events are "extremely different from what ICE agents are saying or what the agency is saying." According to the State Bar of Texas, Balderas-Ibarra holds a probationary license to practice law in Texas.

The investigation by Harris County authorities continues, with dozens of subpoenas issued as the community awaits further developments.
