The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a prominent pro-LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, has endorsed 29 candidates in battleground districts for the 2026 elections. These endorsements have raised questions about whether the candidates share the same progressive beliefs as the group, particularly on issues related to LGBTQ+ rights and education.

HRC has taken firm stances on several contentious topics. Following a Supreme Court ruling affirming parents' rights to withdraw their children from LGBTQ+ classes and lessons, HRC criticized the decision, stating, "This decision elevates the religious beliefs of some parents, who believe that being LGBTQ+ is wrong, over any acknowledgement in the classroom that LGBTQ+ young people and their families exist."

Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson condemned the ruling further, saying, "They’re trying to strip away our freedoms and push us back into the closet while doing nothing to meet the urgent needs of the American people."

Candidates endorsed by HRC have expressed appreciation for the support. Representative Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) remarked, "This will be a tough race, and the support of HRC, which has been dedicated to anti-discrimination research, advocacy and education for more than 40 years, means a great deal to me."

The endorsements underscore the challenges candidates face in balancing their political associations, especially on divisive issues that may affect their moderate image in competitive districts.
