At least six people have died in Ukraine following overnight Russian attacks on the Black Sea port city of Odesa and the eastern city of Sumy, local officials reported on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026.

Odesa region Governor Oleh Kiper described the strikes as a "massive" drone and missile assault marking the fifth consecutive day of Russian attacks on the region. He accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas, noting that a multi-storey residential building, a non-residential building, and a gas pipeline were hit, causing casualties.

In Sumy, the city's acting mayor, Artom Kobzar, said a "guided aerial bomb" attack killed three people and injured 17 others across the country.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's military announced that its drones struck 20 Russian vessels in the Black Sea overnight, including 17 oil tankers, two gas tankers, and one tugboat. Kyiv’s drone force commander Robert Brovdi confirmed these details.

The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed its attack on Odesa, stating it deliberately targeted port infrastructure used for unloading petroleum, oil, and lubricants. Russia claimed to have targeted sites related to military hardware manufacturing and cargo transport.

The ongoing Ukrainian attacks have compelled Russia, the world's top grain exporter, to restrict shipping in the Sea of Azov, a critical route handling about a quarter of its grain exports, according to Reuters.

These developments come amid political shifts in Ukraine, including President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissing Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko after less than a year in office.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on the same day, announcing plans to deepen Ukraine-European Union defense integration.
