On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, an international team of around 80 scientists and crew departed from Harwich, England, aboard the polar research ship RSS David Attenborough. Their five- to six-week expedition aims to study Greenland's rapidly melting glaciers and assess whether the influx of freshwater could disrupt a major Atlantic Ocean current system that helps regulate Europe's climate.
The mission is part of the £20 million GIANT project (Greenland Ice sheet to AtlaNtic Tipping points), which seeks to understand how glaciers melt and break into the ocean and the subsequent impacts. Scientists are concerned that the melting freshwater may interfere with ocean currents, potentially leading to more extreme weather and rising sea levels in Europe.
Kelly Hogan, a marine geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), which is leading the mission, told Reuters aboard the vessel, "The heat waves in the UK and in Europe the last few months have really driven home that it's difficult for us to adapt to even quite small changes in our climate."
Ship Captain Matt Neill, who first traveled to Antarctica as a BAS cadet in 2011, remarked that he has witnessed firsthand the impact of the world's changing climate. He emphasized the importance of gathering data and improving climate models during these dynamic times.
The research vessel, officially named after naturalist David Attenborough but popularly known as "Boaty McBoatface," carries a high-tech submersible bearing the latter name. This submersible will dive 1,500 meters below the glacier mélange—a mixture of sea ice and snow where the glacier meets the sea—to map its geometry and influence on the glacier.
Sam Smith, an operations engineer at the National Oceanography Centre, said, "It's going to be collecting a lot of data that's never really been collected before."
The expedition follows a record-breaking warm June in Britain and Western Europe, which disrupted power supplies, closed schools, and caused excess deaths, underscoring the urgency of understanding climate change impacts.
