France’s dynamic and free-scoring run at the 2026 World Cup concluded with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 15th, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite being touted as the most exciting attacking team since Brazil’s legendary 1982 side, France struggled to break through a disciplined Spanish midfield.

Spain’s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz effectively cut off France’s supply lines from midfield, leaving the French attack largely ineffective. It took France more than 75 minutes to register their first shot on target, by which time Spain was comfortably leading 2-0 and in control of the match.

Key French players including Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, and Desire Doue had collectively scored 16 goals in six matches leading up to the semifinal. A victory would have made 27-year-old Mbappe only the second player after Brazil’s Cafu to appear in three World Cup finals (1994, 1998, 2002). However, with the loss, Mbappe’s hopes for a third final were dashed.

Following the defeat, Mbappe expressed confidence in the French squad’s talent and potential to rebound, with an eye on the 2028 European Championship.
